First Annual Black Student Union Graduation

By
May 18, 2008 - 10:00:16 AM

The Albuquerque Public Schools and Black Student Unions (BSU) celebrated their first ever Rites of Passage Celebration.  The historical event was held at Highland High School, with members of the BSU’s graduating class of 2008 being recognized for their achievements as members of the Black Student Unions.

The event was presented by Joycelyn Jackson, BSU director, and the BSU sponsors.  Community sponsors of the event were Excel Educational Enterprises Inc., French’s Mortuary and the Perspective II.

“The importance of this special recognition is to reward our students who commit to work to achieve excellence through the guidelines of the Black Student Union program.  These students are special in that they have requirements that must be met throughout the school year and the students you see here, have accomplished those goals.  We are very proud of our students, and this is a way to show our appreciation for their accomplishments,” Shared Mrs. Jackson.

Forty-seven student members of the Black Student Union were present for the special recognition ceremony.  Also present for the event was Albuquerque Public School’s new superintendent, Mr. Winston Brooks. Mr. Brooks was also present for the inaugural ceremony of the rites of passage celebration.
